For this annual Dartmoor meet we will be staying at the usual “glamping value” site at Langstone Manor, Moortown PL19 9JZ about 2 miles east of Tavistock on the western edge of Dartmoor in the grounds of an old manor house. We have used this site for many years and we know the owners very well. The facilities are excellent with good shower, toilets and washing up, clothes washing and drying, as well as an onsite shop, bar, lounge and eating facilities. The owners are Jane and David. (See the website www.langstonemanor.co.uk). I will be booking pitches for the campers early so get your name down so I know how many pitches to book. You will need to pay on arrival for your place, which is booked in my name under Romsey Climbers. The price per person per night will be confirmed when I book.

The contact details for the site are 01822 613371 and  www.langstonemanor.co.uk.

As well as camping, there are some wooden Pods with power and lighting for the less hardy climbers. You will still need to bring sleeping bag, mattress and cooking gear. If you wish to book a Pod, please do this yourself as I will only be booking camping places with Jane. There will probably be a deposit to be paid for a Pod, so book early to ensure a bed for the night. Be aware that if we have to cancel at the last minute due to bad weather you may lose your deposit on a Pod booking. Please let me know if you are camping or using a Pod so I know how many camping spaces to book.

We advise you also bring along wet weather walking gear in case the weather turns damp as there are many miles of Dartmoor to explore if we cannot climb. All that is required is a waterproof coat, over trousers, some walking boots and a small ruck sac for food etc.

  1. I would like to come along too please. I will probably drop my wife with her family in North Devon and join you for some or all of the time. Will be good to get my tent out 👍

  2. I have booked 5 pitches for all the campers. Anyone using a Camper Van or a Pod will need to book their own slot directly with the campsite (see details above). I will set up a WhatsApp group nearer the time to allow us all to easily chat to sort out travel plans and who goes with whom. Hopefully the campsite will allow us to pay when we get there as individual campers on a ‘per person per night’ rate, so take cash or a card with you. Just tell them you are with Romsey Climbers as it is all booked in my name so they can show you which pitches are ours. Please remember there will be about 3 small tents per pitch, hopefully all together so careful how you pitch when you arrive! I will let you know the price when the campsite confirm the booking. I have also asked for a table for each night in the bar so please confirm if you are arriving Thursday or Friday, and if you wish to eat in the bar each night.

  3. I’m up for this one, wearing my special “less hardy climber” hat with pride. Planning to book a small camping pod (directly with the campsite, yes Pete).

    • Standards are slipping I see! It may be if the weather is not very nice we can use your pod as a base for the day, tea coffee etc. Make sure you book a really large one.

  4. Hi to everyone. I have had a reply from the campsite. 5 pitches have been reserved for the campers, Thursday pm – Sunday am (3 nights) so room for 13- 15 tents (allowing for more members to join us later). So far we have 11 or 12 people possibly camping for some or all of those nights with 2 people in Pods and possibly 1 person in a van. Charlottes Mum & Dad are also going and staying in a van. I will be able to confirm numbers with the campsite nearer the time. I know there are a few people who are a ‘maybe’ for various reasons but numbers are flexible at the moment. I just wanted to secure some pitches now as April will be popular. The cost for campers is £7 per person per night, a real bargain. You pay the campsite on arrival for your pitch if you are camping. Let them know you are with Romsey Climbers, booked in my name, so they can show you where our 5 pitches are.

More importantly I need to reserve some tables in the bar for Thursday Friday and Saturday night. The bar is run by different people to the campsite so I need to now numbers soon so I can e mail them for reservations. Can you all please all tell me which nights you wish to eat in at the campsite bar. In the past they stop serving food about 9 pm so if you are arriving after then you will need to make other arrangements. We usually eat about 7pm onwards. At the moment approximate numbers will do as we can adjust numbers nearer the time. Saying that, if you pull out at the last minute it should not be a problem if it is only a couple of people. Just want to make sure there is a seat for everyone.

  5. Hi all
Assume 3 nights for me (though the reality is likely to be 2)
    small 1 man tent
I will need to travel independently as will be going with my wife to in-laws in north Devon first and will prob stay one of the 3 nights with her either the first or last of the 3.
    Thanks for arranging Pete

  6. Looking at the posts and messages I have received, this is what I understand of peoples arrangements.

I will drive down Thursday morning with John Horton and return Sunday pm.
Hannah will drive to Carons house in Devon Wednesday and they will arrive Thursday morning, returning Sunday pm?
Adrian will drive to Devon Thursday with his family, and Adrian will join us at the camp site for 2 of the 3 nights (TBD) and return Sunday.
Charlotte will travel down Friday with her parents, and return Sunday.
John Knight will drive down alone Thursday eve and return Sunday pm.
Lindsay will drive down alone Thursday and return Saturday.
Duncan will drive down alone Friday and return Sunday pm.
Juan will drive down Friday alone and return Sunday pm – can give a lift home only.
Sarah will drive down Friday with Tash and return Sunday
John Duffield may join us for Thursday or Friday – Sunday traveling on his own. TBC
Helen may join us for the meet Friday to Sunday? Travel plans TBC.

Everyone has said yes to eating in the on-site bar for some or all of the nights, so I have pre booked enough places to cover all situations. We also have 5 pitches booked for campers which is probably one more than we now need, so nearer the time I may cancel 1 pitch if numbers do not increase. Just to remind everyone, campers need to book in on arrival with the office and pay their individual money of £7 per person per night to the campsite. We are booked in as Romsey Climbers under my name. The warden will show you which pitches we have. Do not spread out too much over the pitches as we have possibly 11 campers plus possibly 9 or 10 cars max, but more likely a couple less so we will need a bit of space for anyone who arrives later than Thursday mid day.

  7. I would like to attend, Friday to Sunday, I’ll be camping in my tent. I will be eating in the bar every night. I need to travel independently on Friday but happy to drive somebody back Sunday pm.

    • I will be in a tent, on my own. Waiting to hear back from the bar as to whether they can accomodate my dietary restrictions. Once they do I will confirm whether I will join for dinner or not.

      • Thanks Tash, hope they can. If not you can always join us all at the table after you have eaten, and have a drink or two with us. It is a very relaxed area and drinkers only are always welcome. When will you arrive and how many nights are you camping please.

        • Friday to Sunday for sure, would it be ok to confirm about Thursday closer to the time?

I have had a response from the pub that they can definitely cater for me! So I would like to join for dinner – for sure on the Saturday night. When do you need final confirmations?

          • Not until about 1 week before the meet, it is quite flexible in the bar bookings and the camping pitches. I have you down as Thursday – Sunday at the moment. If you change to Friday, not a problem one or two people either way for camping or eating in the bar.

  8. Doing a final check from the posts and messages I have received, this is what I understand of peoples arrangements.

I will drive down Thursday morning with John Horton and return Sunday pm.
Hannah will drive down Wednesday or Thursday morning, returning Sunday pm. May travel with Pete & John Thursday?
Adrian will drive down Thursday with his family, will join us Thursday pm & camp for 2 nights and return Saturday pm.
Charlotte will travel down Friday with her parents, and return Sunday.
John Knight will drive down alone Thursday eve and return Sunday pm.
Duncan will drive down alone Friday and return Sunday am.
Juan will drive down Friday alone and return Sunday pm – can give a lift home only.
Sarah will drive down Friday with Tash and return Sunday

Helen may join us for the meet Friday to Sunday? Travel plans TBC.

Just to remind everyone, campers need to book in on arrival with the office and pay their individual money of £7 per person per night to the campsite. We are booked in as Romsey Climbers under my name. The warden will show you which pitches we have. If the office is closed and you arrive in the evening, check in the bar to find us and I can show you where we are camping. Do not spread out too much over the pitches as we have possibly 9 campers plus possibly 6 or 7 cars max, so we will need a bit of space for anyone who arrives later than Thursday mid day.

I have booked enough places in the restaurant for Thursday, Friday and Saturday night so everyone can eat or have a drink. Some people may not wish to eat every evening but are welcome to join the tables for a drink only with us while we eat.

  9. I have created a WhatsApp group page with everyone on it who is (or may be) going so we can all remotely chat on the journey down and during the trip. This is useful to see who is where and when they are arriving or for sorting out meeting up at the crags or in the pub/cafe etc.

  10. Lindsay is now unable to attend due to work leave problems, John Duffield cannot attend due to testing positive with Covid and Caron has an injury so will not be going.
